Throughout southern Spain the annual grape harvest is celebrated with festivals. The most vibrant of these is held in the city of Jerez de la Frontera, where the Vendimia Grape Festival 2018 will take place from 1 to 16 September.
Festivities start with the ‘Pisa de la Uva’ or the treading of the grapes, and an opening ceremony in which the Queen of the Harvest is selected. Then the party begins. Expect the streets of the Moorish-inspired city to fill for a fortnight with revellers stomping grapes, dancing the flamenco and naturally tasting plenty of wine. With horse parades and a magnificent firework display this is the highlight of the cultural calendar for the city renowned for its sherry.
