Oman is an unusual country in the middle east, in that it is as rich in culture and history as in oil. The capital Muscat is one of the most intriguing cities in the region and, the Al Jabal Al Akhdar mountain range is spectacular, as is the long coastline.
The capital feels like a modern city, as most buildings date from 1970 when the current Sultan ousted his father. However there is still much to admire in the city, especially around the Al Dhalam souk in the Muttrah district. Another highlight is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque.
October to April is the best time to visit, as the temperature is not as hot as in the summer. In the mountains the temperature can fall at night, so it’s best to take some warm clothes with you.
