With so much media coverage of its long border with the USA, you might be forgiven for realising that Mexico is a wonderful country, rich in culture offering far more that the beaches of Cancun.
The capital is both the oldest in the Americas and one of only two, with Quito in Ecuador, that was founded by native Americans. A massive metropolis, you need to take it on in bight size pieces, although visiting the main square with its gargantuan flag is a good starting point.
The country has many fine examples of pyramids and temple complexes dating back to Aztec and Mayan times. Palenque, Teotihuacan, Uxmal and Chichen Itza, which is one of the seven modern wonders, are well worth the visit.
If you want to get away from it all and discover the real Mexico, then head for the southern state of Oaxaca and drift back in time. You will never forget it.
