This year marks the 60th anniversary of Michael Bond’s original book entitled A bear called Paddington, now translated into 40 languages. The book was later brought to life by blockbuster film Paddington in 2014 and its sequel, Paddington 2 in November 2017 both of which achieved worldwide success.
Ahead of the release of Paddington 2 on DVD on 12th March, those looking to venture to Paddington’s home of Peru and see its spectacled bears for themselves can book Journey Latin America’s 14-day ‘From Paddington to Peru’ itinerary for all the family.
Largely known as the Andean bear, the species is the last remaining short-faced bear and the only surviving species of bear native to South America, primarily found in the Western Andean region. Because of its habitat loss, the spectacled bear is classified by the IUCN and the Peruvian government is dedicated to the conservation of its native bear species. The country’s ‘Spectacled Bear Conservation’ project works collaboratively with private land owners and rural communities to ensure the conservation of the Spectacled bear in the habitats of northern Peru through science and research.
The ‘From Paddington to Peru’ package offers the chance to see Peruvian spectacled bears first hand in their own natural environment. The holiday also explores magnificent Inca ruins with a backdrop of snow-spangled Andean peaks in the Sacred Valley of the Incas and at Machu Picchu, further downstream, where the Urubamba River crashes towards the Amazon basin.
Price starts from £3,514pp and includes exploring the street life and markets of Lima, a guided excursion to Sipan and the Royal Tombs Museum, a visit to the Choco museum, exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a walking tour around Huilloc and Pumamarca, a train to Machu Picchu with a guided tour and a visit to the Spectacled Bear project. Price excludes international flights, British Airways offers return direct flights from London to Lima from £658pp. For more information or to book visit: www.journeylatinamerica.co.uk/destinations/peru/holidays/from-paddington-to-peru
