De Vere Horwood Estate celebrates Halloween with Murder Mystery
This Halloween Joy Swift’s Original Murder Mystery Weekends is hosting one of her fun filled complex plots at the traditionally English De Vere Horwood Estate. This brain teasing weekend of crime puts guests at the centre of solving her new 133rd ingenious and suspense filled case by becoming detectives.
Whilst enjoying a splendid three-course dinner, shot rings out, a blood-curdling scream rips the night air, and it is revealed that someone has been murdered. With a ghastly crime committed, police race to the scene and a mystery needs to be solved. More victims fall at the hands of the mysterious killer, or killers and guests at De Vere Horwood Estate must work together to reveal the criminal.
With its distinctive russet bricks, the ivy-covered mansion at De Vere Horwood Estate is a magnificent back drop to a weekend of crime solving and laughter. Built in 1911, the country house blends a wealth of original and hauntingly beautiful features with 21st-century modern style promises a luxurious and comfortable stay. Guests can relax in modern and stylish bedrooms and suites, whilst indulging in contemporary facilities including an indoor pool, gym, jacuzzi, sauna and tennis court. Set on 38 acres of landscaped grounds, it’s easy to think screams would be lost amongst the picturesque countryside.
A weekend murder mystery package is priced from £300 per person and includes a welcome cocktail reception; two nights stay with dinner and breakfast; plus, Saturday lunch and afternoon tea, full entertainment and a themed Saturday night party. The actors are in character the entire time and three or more ‘murders’ will be committed over the weekend. Guests become involved in the plot that will be explained in a letter sent a month before the Murder Mystery weekend. The weekend finishes with the Detective’s summing up where you’ll learn if your hunches and skills of detective work are correct.

The Ghost in the Tower
All great castles have great ghost stories and Best Western Walworth Castle Hotel near Darlington is no different. The thick walls of the turreted Library Tower on the ground floor are said to hide a spiral staircase and the remains of a maid who once worked in the castle. As the story goes, she was the mistress of one of the lords. She fell pregnant, and was killed when he discovered and flew into a violent rage. ‘People say they have heard her screams and have seen her come through the wall,’ says hotel general manager Surinder Singh. ‘We also had one gentleman who stayed in the room above the library and woke up to find her sitting at the end of the bed.’
A standard double room starts from £52 based on two adults
