Antigua’s newest hotel, The Great House Antigua gives holidaymakers the opportunity to experience a unique piece of the island’s history. The Great House Antigua is set in a 350-year-old former plantation house – the last stone plantation house on the island – that was once part of the Mercer’s Creek estate.
For the past 60 years the plantation house was the home of the Howell family who have decided to open it up as an eight-bedroom boutique hotel to allow more people to enjoy its historic charm and the tranquillity offered by its 26 acres of tropical gardens.
The historic Great House has undergone extensive renovation work to create four individually styled suites, each with a private bathroom. The suites feature antique furnishings including Chippendale chairs, mahogany four-poster beds, china, silver and glassware.
Completing the accommodation offering are four new garden cottage suites housed in two colourful traditional island cottages with pyramid roofs and vaulted ceilings. The suites feature private bathrooms, with his and hers showers and private terraces for relaxing and enjoying the garden setting.
The hotel is the perfect location for a retreat, relaxing by the pool, enjoying guided walks, meditating by the beautifully preserved sugar mill or being pampered in the spa.
Those who want a more active stay can enjoy daily complimentary exercise classes on an exercise deck overlooking the sea, take nature hikes or venture off property to hike to the Mermaid Gardens or take kayak tours.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the room rate. Breakfast and lunch are served in an outdoor courtyard, while candlelit dinners are enjoyed in the dining room. The resort grows at least half of all the fresh produce and the chef visits local markets daily to purchase fresh ingredients for the Antiguan inspired menu.
The resort also features a refurbished swimming pool with a bar serving fruit juices during the day, and a full service spa.
Rates start from US$425 per night in a Garden Suite based on two adults sharing with including breakfast, lunch and dinner.
