You Beauties: New Australian Cinema, BFI

The BFI will screen You Beauties: New Australian Cinema at the BFI Southbank from 3-27 February, 2023.

Curated by ACMI (Australia’s national museum of screen culture) – the selection of features and shorts spotlights independent Australian cinema in all its diversity.

You Beauties: New Australian Cinema is part of the UK/AU 2021-22 season, cultural exchange between Australia and the UK. It follows a season of UK films screened at the ACMI, Melbourne in 2022.

Features are curated by Ghita Loebenstein, with shorts by Treise Armstrong.

Shorts

GEM (2022), CALL HISTORY (2020), LIME PARFAIT (2022), PINK REEF (2022) FINDING JEDDAH (2021). There will also be a series of shorts from Aboriginal and Torres Strait directors, including OUT OF THE SEA LIKE CLOUD, DEAD TONGUE, THE SILENCED, JAARA NYILAMUM, FOR ALL OUR WOMEN OF THE SUN and MULUNMA – INSIDE WITHIN (2021).

Parallel to the programme, audiences across the UK will be able to see examples of New Australian Cinema via the BFI Player. These will include:  The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson (Leah Purcell); My Name Is Gulpilil, and Another Country (both Molly Reynolds); and Toomelah,  Beneath Clouds, Goldstone and Mystery Road (all Ivan Sen).
