The Ukrainian Film Festival is set to return to London from September 19 to 22 2024. Hosted at Curzon Soho, this year’s theme, ‘Reflections,’ explores the quest for identity during tumultuous times, the journey of self-reflection, the pursuit of self-determination, and the acknowledgment and embrace of a present informed by our past.

Ukrainian Film Festival 2024

This four-day event pays homage to the heritage of Ukrainian film, marking the 130th anniversary of the esteemed filmmaker Oleksandr Dovzhenko. Festival-goers will have the chance to experience his iconic film, Earth, enhanced by a modern score from the renowned Ukrainian ensemble DakhaBrakha.

Alongside this cinematic landmark, the festival will present a series of films that echo Ukraine’s ongoing challenges. “Mission 200,” directed by Volodymyr Sydko, narrates the touching tale of Tetiana, a Ukrainian woman who pauses her life to act as a contemporary Charon, ferrying the remains of deceased soldiers. Oksana Karpovych’s conceptual documentary, “Intercepted,” delivers a stark confrontation with the adversary as it seeks to invade Ukraine.

Additionally, the festival will highlight a collection of short films from the Kyiv International Short Film Festival, showcasing the talents of emerging Ukrainian filmmakers as they address the effects of displacement on millions of their fellow citizens. Maryna Er Gorbach’s “Klondike” offers an intense dramatization of the harrowing downing of Malaysian flight MH17 over the Donetsk area, depicting the experiences of those at the heart of this disaster.

The selection of films for the 2024 festival offers striking depictions of Ukrainians — weary, incensed, mourning, yet unwavering in their determination to persist in the struggle for liberty.
