If you know your sports and are into cycling, the Women-only Colorado Classic is the only stand-alone professional women’s road race in the western hemisphere.
With its four stages it provides a great way to get to know the state of Colorado. It begins in Steamboat Springs, with its geothermal waters and beautiful mountain views. The second day is at Avon, in the heart of the Eagle River Valley. Golden, once a gold rush settlement, is now almost a suburb of Denver, and has some great walking and kayaking. Then the final day is in the state capital, Denver.
As this takes place over four days, it is a turn-up-and-watch event. To know more about where the stages are on each day, click here.
History of the Women-only Colorado Classic
The Colorado classic started only two years ago; however, in December 2018 it was changed into a women only stand-alone stage race. This made it the only one of its kind in the Americas that is on the Union Cycliste Internationale calendar as well as the USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour.
What else is there to do in the Denver area?
Away from the race, Denver has its Art Museum that includes a large collection of indigenous art, a botanical garden, a zoo, a water park, food and wine tours and the Rocky Mountains nearby. There is also a certain well-known herb that can be taken recreationally here. It also hosts the Great American Beer Festival in October.
