The Royal Ballet will return to the Royal Opera House in May after a five-month hiatus with a programme to celebrate the best international choreographers – 21st Century Choreographers.

It will include works by Christopher Wheeldon and Crystal Pite, as well as a world premiere by Kyle Abraham, his initial piece for The Royal Ballet.

Within the Golden Hour by Christopher Wheeldon

21st Century Choreographers commences at 7pm on 18 May with Within the Golden Hour by Christopher Wheeldon. Regarded as one of Wheeldon’s best works Within the Golden Hour was created for the San Francisco Ballet in 2008, and first performed by the Royal Ballet in 2016. It is set to music by Ezio Bosso and Antonio Vivaldi.

American choreographer Kyle Abraham has created a new work for the programme, which will feature Royal Ballet Principals Natalia Osipova and Marcelino Sambé.

The Royal Ballet director, Kevin O’Hare says, “What better way to open our series of programmes returning to the stage than with Christopher Wheeldon’s life-affirming Within the Golden Hour.

“It’s been a delight to welcome Kyle Abraham to work with our fantastic dancers ahead of his one-act commission next Season.

“During this time of lockdown the dancers have loved immersing themselves in the work of Crystal Pite with the unique theatricality of The Statement and beautifully poignant Solo Echo which will complete the programme in a moment of reflection which feels right for this time.”
