As befits such a dynamic and cosmopolitan city Berlin has not one but 70 Christmas markets, many of which have adopted a sustainable theme. In 2022 the Berlin Christmas Markets open on 21 November, which is the day after Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead). However, Winter World at Potsdamer Platz and Winterzauber on Frankfurter Allee have already opened.
Christmas Markets in Berlin
New for 2022 is the Christmas Market at the Spree, (on Friedrichhain’s Osthafen) – all food and drinks in the Spreespeicher are included in the price of the ticket. Other highlights will include the WeihnachtsZauber at Gendarmenmarkt and the Christmas market at Charlottenburg Palace. The latter has been held since 2007, but this year will mark its final year as the area will have a visitor centre built on it.
Sustainable Berlin Christmas Markets 2022
With Berlin recently raked the fifth most sustainable city in the world according to the Global Destination Sustainability Index 2022, it comes as little surprise that sustainability is at the heart of the German capital’s festive celebrations. The Vegan Christmas Market will be held at Fehrbelliner Platz, with vegan cosmetics, clothing and food, while the Wilmersdorf Christmas Village focuses on an environmentally-conscious lifestyle.

The first sustainable Christmas market will be held at the Schönhausen Palace Park in Pankow from 26 November, with booths informing the public about sustainability. More than 80 fairtrade vendors and start-ups will appear at the Environment & Christmas Market on Sophienstrasse. Other Berlin Christmas Markets to focus on sustainability include Neukölln’s Dicke Linda Christmas Market at the Kranoldplatz and the Christmas market in the Späth’schen Baumschulen in Treptow.
Cool Berlin Christmas Design Markets
Berlin is renowned for being a cool destination so it is hardly a surprise for its Christmas markets to take on a hip design feel.
On 4 December, more than 50 local up-and-coming designers will bring their fashion accessories and jewellery to Maybachufer’s Nowkoelln Xmas Flow. Alternatively the Weihnachtsrodeo Designweihnachtsmarkt in the Kühlhaus, Kreuzberg will showcase designs and art from more than 150 creatives.
There is also a safe area at the LGBTQIA Winterdays and Christmas Avenue for the LGBTQ+ community.
Twinkling Berlin
Christmas in the Tierpark commences on 18 November creating the sense of fairyland for all to enjoy. However this year the spirit of Christmas will be created in a energy efficient way, through using LED lights and other sustainable energy concepts. From November 16 to 15 January, you can also explore Berlin’s illuminated Botanical Garden.
