Prepare to be enchanted by world-class theatre at the Stratford Festival Ontario Canada. This renowned theatre festival celebrates the works of William Shakespeare alongside a vibrant mix of contemporary productions, musicals and Greek tragedies.
History of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival
The Stratford Festival Ontario boasts a rich history dating back to 1953. Founded by journalist Tom Patterson, as a way to regenerate the town, the festival took inspiration from Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford-upon-Avon, in England. Initially focusing solely on Shakespeare’s plays, the festival has blossomed into a more diverse theatrical experience. Tyrone Guthrie was the first artistic director of the festival.
In 1953, Alec Guinness, working for expenses only, began the first festival with Richard III. Christopher Plummer, Peter Ustinov, Maggie Smith, William Shatner and Christopher Walken are among the actors who have appeared here.
In 2022 the festival opened the Tom Patterson theatre which is one of the leading theatre halls in Canada.
