From the 7 to the 11 November the talk of Las Vegas, Nevada is bull, bull, bull, because the Professional Bull Riders World Finals is in state.
Billed by the hyperbolic promotional material as the biggest party of the year, the Professional Bull Riders World Finals certainly falls squarely in the category of extremely extreme sports. In case you had any doubts about that, the website keeps a detailed injury list of riders. And for the other side, Professional Bull Riders has a policy on the welfare and treatment of the bulls, which it calls “animal athletes”.
Tickets are already on sale and include access to ground zero seats right down at eye level called the Shark Cage. If you have the urge, the website includes a section on how you can become a professional bull rider.
Another interesting aspect of the Professional Bull Riders World Finals is that they recognise both the human world champion and the bull, Sweet Pro’s Bruiser, who has his own profile. Bruiser had a particularly strong 2016 with a throw rate – known as a buck off – of 93.33%, when only one competitor managed to ride him. Not far behind is Spotted Demon who has had an excellent year so far. Despite their impressive ratings, they seem to earn a lot less cash than the human competitors, who never seem to get the message that bulls don’t like freeloaders.

Outside of the festival, Las Vegas is already famous for its material excesses, casinos and nightlife, but there are other sides to it too. It has many great street murals, the Mob Museum, nearby hiking, zip lining or going up the observation tower or the observation wheel. Further afield you can visit Death Valley, the Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam.
