Paczki Day is a Polish festival celebrated in Detroit and other cities in the United States Midwest on Fat Tuesday. The Polish celebration came to the United States with 19th century Polish and Lithuanian immigrants. It is celebrated predominantly in cities with a high Polish population such as Buffalo, Chicago and Detroit.

What Is Paczki?

Paczki (pronounced PONCH-KEE) are sugary Polish pastries much like doughnuts that are filled with prunes. Traditionally in Poland, the paczki balls would have a splash of Spiritus vodka. The doughnuts were created to use up all the fat and sugar left over in the build up to Lent. Now it is more an excuse for enjoying the tasty snacks.

In Detroit the day is a major celebration. You can find the delicious savouries across the city, but especially in the Hamtramck area of town, which is noted for its strong Polish community.

What started as a Polish tradition has become has become part of Midwest life. Modern flavours have been added, and you can even discover Paczki Day Vodka at the Detroit City Distillery. There is even a Paczki Day twist on the Coney dog.

Make sure to order your paczki in advance as queues grow outside the most popular bakeries.

Where to Enjoy Paczki Day in Detroit?

As mentioned, head to the Hamtramck district of Detroit. We suggest you try one of these three bakeries:

New Palace Bakery

Something of a Detroit institution, there is nothing new about the New Palace, as it has been serving paczki for over 100 years. They have 12 traditional and more specialty fillings.

New Martha Washington Bakery

Another big crowd puller, the New Martha Washington Bakery lays claim to making the largest paczki in Michigan.

Good Cakes and Bakes

This LGBTQ+, woman-owned bakery specialises in vegan and organic food. Located on the Avenue of Fashion, Good Cakes and Bakes has strawberry, lemon and red velvet flavours which apparently are to die for.
