Lumiere Light Festival Durham is the largest light festival in the UK. Held every other year since 2009, the next Lumiere Festival is slated to occur in November 2023.

Organisers invite international and local artists to transform urban spaces and famous landmarks of the city of Durham. Anyone over the age of 18 can apply to have their artwork displayed at the festival. Details about how you can apply can be found here.

This is a wonderful opportunity to see the historic city illuminated like at no other time.

History of Lumiere Light Festival Durham

Produced by Artichoke, the original Lumiere light festival was imagined as a one-off event in 2009. However, it has been reprised each odd year since then.

In 2017, some 240,000 visitors came to Durham to see Lumiere, which features art commissions including Adam Frelin’s White Line and Methods by Pablo Valbuena.

Over the decade artists have worked with thousands of local people and schoolchildren in various projects.

The festival has also travelled across the UK – to Derry~Londonderry in 2013, and to London in 2016 and 2018.

When is Lumiere Light Festival Durham?

The festival is held every other year. The next festival is scheduled for 16 to 19 November 2023.

Yes, there is no cost to attend the festival.

Lumiere is supported by the commissioning body of Durham County Council, Arts Council England and many indovidual supporters.
