The Hayward Gallery, Southbank will present Kicking Dust, the first solo exhibition of the South African artist Igshaan Adams from May to July 2021.

In it Adams will reimagine the brutalist architecture of the Hayward Gallery as an immersive textile environment by hanging cloud-like sculptures and woven tectonic plates. Adams has been inspired by his childhood in Cape Town and memories of the indigenous Riel dancing of the Northern Cape, which is the dust kicking that inspires the exhibition’s name.

An exploration of race, religion and sexuality, Kicking Dust draws heavily on Islamic iconography and the artist’s Islamic faith. Visually surreal and fantastical, it’s an exhibition about heart, community, togetherness and our commonality.

Hayward Gallery Director Ralph Rugoff, says, “We are thrilled to be able to present a major new installation by Igshaan Adams, one of the most innovative young artists working today. Adams’ intricately woven sculptures and tapestries, fashioned from an expansive and exhilarating range of materials, reflect on the complex interconnections that contribute to contemporary identities.

“His Hayward Gallery installation invites us to reimagine how we navigate complex social landscapes defined by an ever-evolving weave of differences and desires.”

Kicking Dust is curated by Tarini Malik and Marie-Charlotte Carrier.

Igshaan Adams is the winner of the 2018 Standard Bank Young Artist award. He lives and works in Cape Town.
