The inaugural Great Cornish Seafood Weekend is set to take place on October 26 and 27 at the Great Cornish Food Store in Truro. This event will celebrate seafood, Cornwall’s fishing industry and its workers. The weekend will feature live demonstrations, talks, tasting stations, a seafood bar, sea shanties and numerous children’s activities.

Pete Murt (main image), head chef at Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant, is among the first guest chefs announced for the event. Pete began his seafood career in 2000 at age 16 as a kitchen porter at Rick Stein’s St Petroc’s Bistro. Following travel in East Asia, he returned to Padstow and ascended to head chef at The Seafood Restaurant, becoming only the fourth person to hold the position in its 40-year history.
Stephane Delourme, former head chef and group chef at Rick Stein Restaurants, will join Pete to showcase the art of shucking and cooking oysters with various flavours. Renowned fishmonger Annie Seabourne from My Fish Kitchen will demonstrate her expertise in cooking, picking and eating crab. Jeffrey Robinson, a pioneer in receiving a Green Michelin Star for his commitment to provenance and sustainability, will also participate, coinciding with the opening of his new cookery school in St Ives.
The Great Cornish Seafood Weekend is an event jointly organised by the acclaimed Great Cornish Food Store and the Cornish Fish Producers’ Association (CFPO), representing over 160 member vessels.
Chris Ranford, the CFPO’s chief executive, will be one of the speakers at the weekend event. His talk will concentrate on the crucial economic contribution of the fishing industry, which provides employment for approximately 8,000 individuals in the region west of the River Tamar.
The Cornwall Wildlife Trust will also be present over the weekend, promoting their Good Seafood Guide, the premier resource for advice on sustainable seafood choices. Falmouth’s own singer-songwriter Toby Webb, along with the fiddle and double bass duo ‘Months Advance’, will entertain visitors with folk music and sea shanties throughout both days.
The store’s exterior will be converted into a children’s play area, featuring mobile rock pooling by The Rock Pool Project, a social enterprise from Cornwall and Devon, and fish-themed face painting.
