With the continuing threat of rising water levels in the UK caused by climate change Flood Barrier is a timely moving image commission created by Catherine Yass, which will be screened at the ICA on 14 November and Turner Contemporary on 18 November.

The work coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Great Flood (1953). It premiered at Valence House Museum in Dagenham on 22 September, where an exhibition was also held. The screenings at the ICA and Turner Contemporary are presented by Create London.

Flood Barrier

Yass’ film focuses on the Barking Creek Flood Barrier, and raises awareness of the environmental impact of rising sea levels and changes as they impact upon east London.

Yass was born in London in 1963 and nominated for the Turner Prize in 2002. The artist is noted for her films and use of brightly-coloured photography. Much of her work is presented in light boxes.

In the past, Yass has concentrated on the way that environments are constructed. In her latest piece, she turns her attention to the interaction between the natural world and architecture, and in particular the relationship between the barrier and the native birdlife.
