Eugène Leroy: The Materiality of Light, Paintings 1950-1999 will be on display from 9 February through to 15 April 2023 at the Michael Werner Gallery, London.

The first extensive exhibition of work by French artist Eugène Leroy (1910-2000) to be held in the UK, the exhibition will have over 30 works shown throughout the gallery.

This exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the artist’s body of work as he explored the effects of the changing of the seasons, the passage of time, and the shifting of the light. The paintings range from the early 20th century to the early 21st century.

Leroy would frequently paint from life, using the natural light that came through the windows of his studio. The primary goal of his art was to depict the subject’s connection with light. Leroy took influence from a wide range of painters, including Rubens, Poussin, Giotto, Rembrandt, Bacon and Cézanne, but he concentrated on the more conventional aspects of painting, such as landscape, still life, and portraits.
