QUEERCIRCLE presents Rafael Pérez Evans’ large-scale, site-specific installation Dust Bathers.

Dust Bathers borrows the methods of groups trying to survive and offers a poetic opportunity to asilvestrar, the artist’s Spanish translation for the English verb to re-wild, following queer theorists Jose Esteban Muñoz, Jack Halberstam, and Tavia Nyong’o.

The art exhibition explores rural agricultural protest and gay dissent, eschewing metropolitan appropriations of the countryside.

Pérez Evans’ installation symbolises untamed, unclean gestures of resistance, connecting farm labourers demonstrating on the streets and Queer nightlife dancefloors.

Pérez Evans inspires audiences to imagine new possibilities by figuratively emptying the LGBTQ+ rainbow.

Earth covers the gallery floor. A lengthy conveyor belt connected to a massive hay blower is erected on one side of the space. Visitors are encouraged to hand-load earthy material daily onto the conveyor belt during opening hours. The conveyor belt feeds earth into the blower when staff turn on the equipment, generating a dust cloud that bathes the gallery in earthy tones. Audiences can roll, shake, dance and dust bathe outside of scheduled activations.

QUEERCIRCLE’s side window will be unobstructed allowing passersby and non-participants to see the dust storms.
