Complicité/Simon McBurney – Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead

The acclaimed company Complicité makes its Barbican stage debut with this fresh production of Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead based on the magnificent novel by Nobel Prize winner Olga Tokarczuk.

Men are being killed in a remote community in the dark Polish winter. Janina, a former engineer, environmentalist, amateur astronomer and passionate translator of William Blake, sees the events as they happen through her eyes. Janina discovers herself involved in furious opposition against the injustices happening all around her as she takes on the challenge of finding the perpetrator in this utterly compelling mystery.

A fun and thought-provoking piece, the play challenges us to reflect on what it means to live in harmony with the environment, our role in the ecosystem, and the grave dangers we will all face if our connection to nature is broken.

With its uncompromising critique of authoritarian systems, Tokarczuk’s darkly humorous, anarchic whodunnit, incited outrage when it was first published in its home Poland.
