Standing on One Hand is the first solo exhibition in the UK by Don Van Vliet better known by his stage name Captain Beefheart since 1994.

Michael Werner Gallery will host the exhibition of the musician and artist, which will feature several paintings first shown in the UK capital.

Don Van Vliet / Captain Beefheart

As Captain Beefheart, Van Vliet is known for his avant-garde music which challenged the conventional norms of rock and roll. He collaborated with Frank Zappa and his experimental music influenced many bands including Nirvana and the Pixies.

In the middle of the 80s, Van Vliet turned his artistic focus to painting. His art draws heavily on the New York School of Abstraction and European painting at the end of the last century. Bold and edgy, Van Vliet’s art does not conform to one particular style, just like his music.
