A major exhibition of art from contemporary China opens at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao on May 11. Entitled Art and China after 1989: Theatre of the World, the exhibition is set in the context of Chinese political events between the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Exhibit themes deal with the rise of China as a major global power following the end of the Cold War and advent of globalisation. During this period artists have acted both as critical observers and actors on the rise of China.
The exhibition involves a variety of artistic genre, including photography, performance, paintings, installations and video art. There will also be some social projects.
Art and China After 1989: Theatre of the World continues until September 23.
