Hoxton 253 Gallery will open Absolutely Augmented Reality, a new exhibition of work by New York-based artists Ajuan Song and Kuzma Vostrikov in June 2021.

The exhibition, which was previously postponed due to Covid, will feature photography by American filmmaker, writer and artist Kuzma Vostrikov, and Chinese multimedia artist Ajuan Song.

Absolutely Augmented Reality

The immersive and sensory pieces present a dreamlike existence that mixes archetypal images with inversions of iconic art with references to Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso and Rene Magritte amongst others.

If Magritte and David Lynch were to conceive a lovechild on a bed of Chinese kitsch this would be Absolutely Augmented Reality

The poetic exhibition is produced by Halime Özdemir and curated by Chelsea Pettitt. It represents a colourful juxtaposition to the greyness of 2020.

“If Magritte and David Lynch were to conceive a lovechild on a bed of Chinese kitsch this would be Absolutely Augmented Reality,” says Halime Özdemir.

Chelsea Pettitt says, “It is a joy to see such dream-like, handcrafted images by Kuzma Vostrikov and Ajuan Song as part of Absolutely Augmented Reality. As rebellious figures, longing for freedom, they’ve found themselves in New York; the city where anything can happen. No wonder they view their life, their reality, as surreal – one and the same.

“Saturated in vibrant colours, Kuzma Vostrikov and Ajuan Song offer a carnival for the visual senses, referencing pop culture, surrealism, fashion, philosophy and film, forcing us to question what does ‘Absolute’ really mean?”

For the exhibition, Kuzma and Ajuan developed initial sketches which were refined using models, costumes and props, before being photographed.

Kuzma Vostrikov and Ajuan Song say, “We are prisoners of our imagination and our circumstances. The work selected for this exhibition in its own way is an image of our quarantine. More than just photography, our work is an investigation into metaphysics which creates a sense of exploration and melancholic intrigue.
