Do you want to enjoy a long road trip in a campervan, but you don’t have the time? What if we told you all you need to find time for is a weekend, and you can enjoy as many delicious road trips as you want? Starting in Melbourne, you can visit plenty of places on a weekend, allowing you to enjoy adventures in a campervan without committing to week-long trips.

We have the 4 best trips outlined below for you!

  1. Great Ocean Road

Great Ocean Road is one of the world’s most iconic road trips; you can explore it in just a weekend! The entire trip takes 243km, which you can do in nine hours, or you can spread it over a weekend and soak in as many of the beautiful spots along the way.

We recommend the following route:

  1. Melbourne to the Great Ocean Road (turn off just after Geelong for a surf trip at Torquay)
  2. Drive to Apollo Bay, where you can stop overnight and make time for Kennett River to spot wild koalas
  3. As you leave Apollo Bay, you will pass the 12 Apostles, and you can also see Loch Ard Gorge and London Bridge coastal rock formations
  4. Head back to Melbourne through Victoria, making time for the Great Otway National Park

2. Grampians National Park

Three hours northeast of Melbourne is home to Grampians National Park. This beautiful inland region is known for its waterfalls, panoramic views, and hiking trails. While you can complete the trip in one day, we think it’s better to allow yourself the full weekend to explore as much of the park as possible. Our favourite activities on this trip include:

3. Falls Creek

Falls Creek can be reached in four hours and thirty minutes, making it the perfect weekend trip. It’s easy to do in a day, but you will be left wanting more, so hire a campervan and dedicate the entire day to exploring all of Falls Creek.

You can visit Falls Creek all year but expect a very different experience from each season. It transforms into one of Australia’s top ski resorts, with plenty of slopes that skiers and snowboarders will love during the winter. The Alpine National Park hosts thousands of skiers and snowboarders yearly, with slopes for beginners and more experienced skiers so you can enjoy the trip regardless of your experience level. If you plan to visit and ski, you will definitely want to allow the full weekend to explore each slope.

During the summer, the snow melts, and you are left with lush rolling pains to explore. The National Park becomes a haven for hikers and cyclists, where you can enjoy several walking trails and even canoe on the sparkling lake.

4. Wilsons Promontory

Wilsons Promontory is three hours southeast of Melbourne and has more than enough on offer to make a weekend trip to remember. The national park boasts granite mountains and wildlife like wombats, kangaroos, and emus.

The park features plenty of walking tracks, all well signposted with their difficulty levels to help you find the perfect trail. We recommend packing good hiking boots and plenty of sunscreen for a weekend trip here!

Plenty of sights to fill your weekend exploring, with our favourite being Squeaky Beach. Enjoy a swim in these stunning waters or walk along the shore before settling in for the night. There are lots of outdoor activities, like the summit track at Mount Oberon.

If you want to make even more of your time at Wilson’s Promontory, take a detour to Phillip Island. The island itself has enough to explore to fill a weekend, but you can also explore the highlights in a day. Ensure you see the nightly fairy penguin parage and as much of the coastlines and seaside villages as possible.
